Survey: States behind private sector in EHR adoption
EHR Connection, March 12, 2007
More than twice as many public healthcare organizations participate in RHIOs than private organizations; however, the private sector has adopted more EMR systems than public organizations, according to a Government Health IT report on a Citrix Systems survey.
The survey of 99 state health executives and 347 private-sector health IT executives found that
- 19% of state health executives reported using EMRs, and only 16% said their state had set a timeline to achieve broad EMR use
- 52% of private-sector healthcare IT executives said their organizations were already using EMRs, and another 5% said they were hosting EMRs for others
- 30% of private-sector organizations reported that they are still in the planning phase, and 37% of those expect to deploy EMRs in less than two years
- 43% of state health executives said their organization participates in a RHIO, compared with 20% of private-sector respondents
- 70% of state executives said that private providers are leading RHIO development
