Tip of the week: Get familiar with HICS

Healthcare Security Weekly, March 12, 2007

In the world of emergency preparedness, the latest acronym is HICS IV, which stands for Hospital Incident Command System.

The command system can be used to manage any activity in the hospital, down to the company picnic, says Lisa Schoenthal, deputy chief of disaster medical services for California's Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA), the agency that maintains the standard.

Using HICS in nonemergencies can make a hospital more familiar with how it works and might possibly make things go smoother when an actual emergency sets off HICS IV procedures. To learn more, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-67722.html.  The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
