Physicians support pay for performance but oppose public reporting

Three out of four primary care physicians support the use of financial rewards as an incentive for better medical care, according to a study in the March/April issue of Health Affairs. However, most of these physicians oppose public reporting of such quality assessments at the individual or group level.

When surveyed about pay for performance, fewer than one-third of physicians believed that existing quality measures were sufficient, and only slightly more than one-third of physicians believed health plans and the government would work to make quality measures accurate.
