Hawaiian residents seek long-term care in Ohio

LTC Liability Monitor, March 6, 2007

Due to a shortage of nursing home beds in Hawaii, there's been an increase in the number of Hawaiian residents moved to Ohio nursing homes, reported the Honolulu Advertiser. In some cases, the influx of residents is costing Ohio taxpayers, too. State officials estimate that about 10 Hawaiian residents have qualified for Ohio Medicaid over the last two years. The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu estimates that about 40 residents a day are waiting to transfer to long-term care homes in Ohio. Hawaiian lawmakers are considering a bill that would require Hawaiian healthcare providers to notify the Hawaii Disability Rights Center in advance of resident transfers to the Mainland, according to the Advertiser.
