Patients consider EHRs when choosing physicians

Physician Practice Advisor, February 28, 2007

Two-thirds of patients in a recent survey said that an electronic health record (EHR) was at least slightly important in their choice of physician, and roughly one-quarter of patients (24%) said EHRs were very important, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle.

Fifty-one percent of patients were willing to pay a reasonable fee for the benefits of EHR, and 77% of consumers said they believed EHRs would give them greater access and more control over their personal medical information.

Only 10% of physicians surveyed said they had the technology, and 86% cited cost of implementing and maintaining EHRs as a top concern. Implmentation time and privacy concerns also prevented some physicians from adopting EHRs.
