Coding Tip: Code the body of operative reports

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 27, 2007

For coding surgical cases, be sure to read the ENTIRE operative report before coding surgical claims.

The procedures listed in the summary section at the beginning of the report can differ from those documented in the body of the report.

Medicare's rule is that only those procedures documented in the body of the operative report are billable.
