Public, corporate payers launch new pregnancy DM efforts

A planned Arkansas Medicaid high-risk maternity pilot project and a new CIGNA HealthCare maternity management program are signs of increasing interest among payers in employing disease management (DM) programs to improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce the number of premature births. Meanwhile, the focus is shifting among some clinicians to improving preconception health and behavior, which then should translate into improved outcomes in pregnancy, says Marie London, product manager for maternity products at DM vendor Health Management Corp (HMC), which is owned by WellPoint, Inc. HMC launched the industry's first maternity management program in 1989.
