Making the hospital a little less lonely
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, February 23, 2007
It used to be that patients in the hospital were lucky to get a phone in their room, but several Chicago-area hospitals are leading the way in providing patients with ways to connect to their loved ones and the outside world.
Comer Children's Hospital, which opened in February 2005, provides a 42-inch liquid crystal display television in each room. Patients can check their e-mail, search the Web, learn about their condition, watch movies, and play video games right in their room, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Comer isn't the only cutting-edge hospital in the Windy City. The University of Chicago's Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital, an adult-care facility, now offers free wireless access. Evanston Northwestern Healthcare will have wireless by the summer, and two other hospitals are expected to jump on board before the end of 2007, the Tribune says.
Another hospital, Resurrection Health Care, has started its own patient blog, which allows family members to post updates about their favorite patient for anyone to view.
Read more about technological advances at Chicago hospitals in the Tribune.
