Dressed for success?

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, February 23, 2007

A study in the February edition of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology shows that a doctor's apparel has little bearing on whether a patient walks away from her consultation feeling satisfied.

Twenty participating physicians were told to wear business attire, casual clothing, or scrubs during appointments with new patients. More than 1,100 women visiting with one of these doctors were asked to complete a survey of 10 questions, rating the doctors' competence and professionalism.

Surveys showed little or no difference in the level of satisfaction among patients who saw physicians dressed in the three different styles. According to the study, the patient experience has more to do with a doctor's demeanor and a good physician-patient interaction.
