Security guard takes in overtime

Healthcare Security Weekly, February 26, 2007

When it comes to city overtime, year to year no one beats a security sergeant at San Francisco General Hospital, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

The security sergeant earned more than $200,000 in 2006 by working more hours than one might think humanly possible, the newspaper reported. The 53-year-old security officer, who is employed by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, earned $121,937 in overtime pay last year, working 1,926 hours of overtime. That works out to about 7 ½ hours a day, every day of the workweek, 52 weeks a year, the newspaper said.

When contacted by the newspaper, the security officer politely declined comment, saying, "I'm on duty." Why so much overtime? Because of staff shortages, the Sheriff's Department has 100 shifts to fill every day and pays overtime to provide coverage, according to a department spokesman.
