Herpes drug found to reduce HIV levels

Infection Control Monitor, February 23, 2007

A drug used to treat genital herpes can also help keep the AIDS virus under control in women with both infections, a new study shows. The drug might also reduce the spread of HIV.

In the study, which was conducted in Africa, women who took the herpes drug valacyclovir had less HIV in their blood and in their genital secretions. The study was published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.
