CMS to provide physician performance information

Physician Practice Advisor, February 21, 2007

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that it will make physician performance data available to Medicare beneficiaries as part of the Better Quality Information to Improve Care for Medicare Beneficiaries (BQI) project.

The Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care, one of CMS' quality improvement organizations, has entered into subcontracts with four regional collaboratives that will combine Medicare data with data from other insurers to produce information on provider performance. The results of the BQI Project will be used for two primary purposes, according to a CMS press release. First, the program will provide performance information to physicians that will assist them in improving the quality of care they deliver to Medicare beneficiaries. Also, the performance data will help Medicare beneficiaries select a physician.

The following regional collaboratives have signed subcontracts: Indiana Health Information Exchange, Massachusetts Health Quality Partners, Minnesota Community Measurement, and Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality.
