Coding tip: ’Always’ bill for implants

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 20, 2007

Is your facility leaving money on the table by not billing for implants used in surgical cases?

Bill implants on your cases to all payers, unless your facility is contractually-prohibited from doing so. Such may be the case with regular intraocular lenses (IOL) on cataract cases, which ASCs cannot bill to Medicare. If your payer is following Medicare, you will not receive reimbursement on IOLs.

But for other implants, such as the screws and anchors used in orthopedic/podiatry cases, facilities are usually not contractually-prohibited from billing these devices, so make sure you bill these implants to your payers.
