Guilty plea in theft of medical information

E-Health Trend Watch, February 16, 2007

Isis Machado, 23, of Miami Lakes, FL, pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to commit computer fraud, identity theft, and wrongful disclosure of individual health information, according to an Associated Press article. The plea stems from charges that she and Fernando Ferrer Jr., 29, of Naples, FL, stole the medical information of more than 1,100 patients at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, FL.

Machado, who was a front desk coordinator at the hospital from May 2005 to June 2006, downloaded the files and sold them to Ferrer. According to the indictment, Ferrer filed false Medicare claims with the information. Machado faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and she could be ordered to pay restitution. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 27.
