DVD encourages men to be nurses

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, February 16, 2007

Men make up less than 10% of the nurse population in the United States, but makers of a new documentary hope to show men that nursing is a viable career option. The 30-minute documentary, titled "Career Encounters: Men in Nursing," was produced by the American Assembly of Men in Nursing and was funded by several organizations, including the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Kaiser Permanente, and Johnson & Johnson's The Campaign for Nursing's Future.

Male nurses from across the country are featured in the program, including student nurses, nurse educators, registered nurses practicing in a variety of settings, a U.S. Army nurse treating wounded soldiers just back from Iraq, nurse anesthetists, and other advanced practice nurses.

The male nurses featured in the DVD explain how they chose nursing as a career, what obstacles they have faced in the predominantly female profession, how their career paths are unfolding, and what they find rewarding about being nurses, according to a release.
