Red day at the mall
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, February 16, 2007
Red was everywhere last Friday at the Westfarm Mall in West Hartford, CT, as Bristol Hospital, the American Heart Association of Northeast Connecticut, and the state Department of Public Health hosted the "Help Your Heart" health fair.
Based on the national Go Red for Women campaign, hospital staff members were on hand to offer free cholesterol screenings, blood pressure tests, body mass index counts, and nutritional consultations. Visitors used computers lent by AT&T to input their screening results into the www.goredforwomen.org site, which evaluated their risk for heart disease.
To attract attention to the free health screenings, models wearing red dresses walked through the mall carrying signs that read, "Stop-and-go." Mall restaurants also served heart-healthy foods at the fair.
Michael Whaley, lead cardiologist at Bristol Hospital told The Bristol Press that the majority of his work is cleaning up years of damage to a heart attack victim's body. The Go Red Fair was designed to focus on preventative care, he said.
