Two nurses assaulted in emergency room

Healthcare Security Weekly, February 19, 2007

An assault on two nurses at the Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada in early February has sparked a debate on whether police officers should be stationed at the hospital to protect medical staff, CBC News reported.

The two nurses and a police officer, called to help with the situation, were attacked in the hospital emergency room (ER) by a 17-year-old, who was charged with assault. There is 24-hour security at the hospital ER, including surveillance cameras and locked doors after 10 p.m., but no on-duty police officer. Police told CBC News that since January 1, they have handled 24 calls to the hospital outpatient department.
