Physicians quit med staff to avoid unpaid ED call

Physician Practice Advisor, February 14, 2007

Thirteen gastroenterologists quit the medical staff of the Loxahatchee, FL, Palms West Hospital in February to avoid treating emergency department patients without compensation, according to The Palm Beach Post.

Palms West Hospital in December required all of the specialists to see emergency patients. Most of the gastroenterologists wanted the hospital to pay them $1,000 daily stipends to handle emergencies. Palms West denied the physicians' demand.

Palm Beach County's medical specialists have increasingly avoided treating emergency patients out of a fear of being sued, and most specialists in the county have opted to not buy malpractice insurance because of its high costs.
