CDC releases guidance on pre-pandemic planning

Infection Control Monitor, February 9, 2007

The CDC on February 2 released a guidance on the use of nonpharmaceutical intervention--from isolating flu patients, to home quarantines, to school shutdowns, and canceling large public gatherings--to mitigate an influenza pandemic.

The 108-page report, Interim Pre-pandemic Planning Guidance: Community Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Mitigation in the United States, focuses on measures other than vaccination and drug treatment that communities might find useful during an influenza pandemic to reduce its effects.

For the first time, the guidance introduces a pandemic severity index to characterize the severity of a pandemic and provides planning recommendations for specific interventions that communities may adopt for a given level of severity, as well as suggests when communities should start those measures and how long they should use them.
