Providers have until February 14 to enroll in Medicare

Physician Practice Advisor, February 7, 2007

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the Medicare enrollment deadline, giving providers until February 14 to decide whether to enroll in Medicare as a participating physician, according to Transmittal 1131.

Although Congress eliminated a projected 5% cut to Medicare reimbursement, payments will not be the same as in 2006 because of changes to work relative value units for evaluation and management codes.

CMS expects contractors to be able to handle claims at the correct 2007 rates beginning in February. CMS is also in the process of mailing out surveys for its annual Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey to gauge providers' satisfaction with their Medicare carriers.
