Coalition offers free electronic prescribing software for physicians

Physician Practice Advisor, February 7, 2007

Physicians who want to explore electronic prescribing but haven't yet invested in an electronic health record system can test the waters with free software offered by the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative (NEPSI), a coalition of technology and health benefits companies, academic medical centers, and healthcare delivery organizations.

The software requires no download, no new hardware, and minimal training, and can generate secure prescriptions that can be sent to 95% of all U.S. pharmacies, according to a NEPSI press release.

The software was designed to appeal to solo physicians or small group practices, which often face cost barriers to electronic prescribing and other healthcare technology. Fewer than one in five practicing physicians currently process prescriptions electronically, and studies indicate that most physicians have been reluctant to adopt electronic prescribing largely because of the cost of the systems and a perception that the technology requires too much time to learn and install, according to the press release.
