California facility fined in resident death

LTC Liability Monitor, February 5, 2007

A skilled nursing facility in Sacramento, CA, was fined $100,000, the highest financial penalty under state law, in the death of a man who was given a "massive overdose of intravenous morphine," according the Sacramento Bee. A representative from the state's licensing and certification program said the event was avoidable. However, the facility's director of nursing, said the nursing home is not in agreement with the state's conclusion and plans to appeal the ruling, reported the Bee.
