Hospital laptop with patient information stolen
Healthcare Security Weekly, February 5, 2007
A laptop computer containing personal information for more than 1,000 patients was reported missing from Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas. Hospital officials offered a $2,000 reward for the return of the laptop, which contained patient names, Social Security numbers, and medical histories, reported the Associated Press. The computer, other equipment, and a small amount of prescription drugs were stolen in January.
The hospital sent letters to patients whose data is in the missing computer, advising them of the problem. Patient information was stored on the laptop because the user travels to different offices to treat patients, said a hospital spokesman, adding the data was double-password protected.
