Investigation leads to resignation and terminations
Healthcare Security Weekly, February 5, 2007
An investigation of University of North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals in Chapel Hill by the state auditor's office led to the resignation or termination of 17 employees who used invalid Social Security numbers when they were hired by the hospital, reported the Triangle Business Journal.
The state auditor's office found that two dozen employees at UNC Hospitals were using Social Security numbers that were invalid or assigned to someone else. Some employees were using the Social Security numbers of dead people. Following the release of the results of the investigation January 29, eight workers were terminated by the hospital and nine others resigned, a hospital spokesman told the newspaper.
