Survey: Americans want electronic access to medical records

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 31, 2007

Americans want to have electronic copies of their medical records and believe having greater access to their information will reduce healthcare mistakes and costly repeat procedures, according to a survey conducted by the Markle Foundation, a healthcare technology advocacy firm in New York City.

Of those surveyed, 97% think it is important for doctors to be able to access medical records electronically for the best care, and 96% think it is important for individuals to have the same access to manage their own health. Despite the findings, eight in 10 Americans are very concerned about identity theft, fraud, and the possibility of marketers using their data without permission.
