Two studies examine EHR: One predicts 400% growth in spending

EHR Connection, January 29, 2007

As of 2005, only 5-10% of hospitals were using EHRs. However, nearly one-fourth of U.S. physician practices were using them, according to a new study at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Lead researcher Ashish K. Jha, MD, MPH, also reported that during 2005, approximately 23.9% of physicians used EHRs in the ambulatory setting.

The report acknowledges that prior studies have defined different adoption-rate estimates, and that different design methodologies or different ways of defining the function and use of technology may be responsible for the discrepancy. The study appeared in the December 2006 Health Affairs. However, a study from market research firm Kalorama Information projects great growth in the market-a 400% increase in EHR spending over an eight year period and double-digit growth in the next decade. According to the report, the market will grow from $1 billion in 2005 to more than $4 billion by 2015, with the majority of growth occurring in the physician segment.
