Secretary Leavitt approves 30 technical standards
EHR Connection, January 26, 2007
The Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), created in 2005, inches forward in the development of a nationwide health information network, as HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt approved its 30 recommended technical standards last week.
In October 2006, the HITSP delivered its recommendations and summary reports to the American Heath Information Community (AHIC). Members of AHIC recommended to Secretary Leavitt that he accept the standards, which are key components of three interoperability specifications. Implementation testing is in progress by healthcare providers, public health agencies, government agencies, standards development organizations, consumers, and other stakeholders.
In other AHIC news, the four teams that received an $18.6 million grant from HHS-Accenture, Computer Sciences, IBM and Northrop Grumman-unveiled their prototype systems for national health information exchange last week in Washington, D.C. All four systems consist of an electronic patient index, integration of seven proprietary EHR software systems, an e-prescribing network, and a PHR management system.
