Family alleges race a factor in hospital treatment

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 28, 2007

Family members of a man who died at Middletown Regional Hospital in Ohio after being struck by a police cruiser, have charged that race was a factor in their treatment by police and the hospital.

The man's daughter said she and other visitors in the emergency room were pushed and shoved by hospital security guards and Middletown police officers, reported the Dayton Daily News. The visitors were told to leave the ER waiting room and when they refused, officers got out their batons, the daughter said. She also alleged that her father, who died in the emergency room, was treated differently because he is black.

Hospital officials said family members and friends were treated according to standard procedure. The communications manager told the newspaper no one was escorted out of the ER waiting room, but that people were not allowed in the emergency room for safety reasons.
