CMS issues guidance about remote access to health records

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 22, 2007

Security directors may want to get familiar with a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) guidance that warns healthcare providers about accessing patient health records remotely. CMS noted in the advisory
the number of security incidents of laptops and other electronic devices being misplaced, lost, or stolen.

The guidance advises providers about potential risks and possible risk
management strategies to protect electronic health information. Entities
covered by HIPAA should be "extremely cautious" about allowing the offsite use of, or access to, this health information, advises CMS.
