Phony physician didn't access patient information
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 22, 2007
A man impersonating a physician gained access to a computer at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, WI on January 11 but did not obtain any patient information, according to news reports.
The man entered the St. Agnes Hospital library records office and asked
for access to one of the inhouse computers, according to a Fond du Lac police report. A hospital employee said she logged the man into the computer system, using her password. However, the computer was only used for medical research and to reference materials and did not link to patient records.
The man told the hospital employee he was a psychiatrist from a Milwaukee hospital, but a check with that facility turned up no on by that name on staff. The man was later seen walking around the intensive care unit. Several employees got suspicious and when they started asking the man questions, he ran from the hospital, according to Action 2 News.
