Keep patients safe from RSV by checking local data
Respiratory Care Weekly, January 24, 2007
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract infections among young children in the United States, reported the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). It can also cause severe respiratory disease and deaths among older adults and people with compromised respiratory, cardiac, or immune systems. Healthcare providers should consider RSV as a cause of acute respiratory disease in all age groups during a region's annual seasonal peak. Because the onset of RSV activity can vary among regions and communities, healthcare providers can consult their local clinical laboratories for the latest data on RSV activity. Currently, no vaccine or effective therapy is available for RSV, according to JAMA.
