Shuttle: From inconvenience to enjoyment
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, January 12, 2007
When Union Hospital in Elkdon, MD, was forced to close its parking lots during construction for several months last year, employees and frequent visitors felt a sense of panic.
But hospital administrators were prepared. They arranged to "borrow" parking spaces from businesses and organizations in the vicinity and they hired six shuttle-bus drivers to make the rounds during business hours between the "borrowed" parking sites and the hospital.
Both the drivers and patients rave about the service. Drivers like connecting with those they're shuttling, and riders say the drivers are friendly, courteous and informative. One rider praised her driver for getting off the shuttle bus at each stop and helping people on and off the bus. Another driver dressed as Santa Claus during the holiday season.
