Oklahoma rule may nix nursing home eye care
LTC Liability Monitor, January 15, 2007
Routine eye care for some nursing home residents in Oklahoma may soon come to an end if the state optometry board has its way, reported Tulsa World. The board is considering a rule change that would restrict optometrists from providing care in nursing homes more than 60 miles from the optometrist's home office. If the rule is approved, it goes into effect unless rejected by state lawmakers. Though a state law passed in 2001 requiring Medicaid to pay for annual eye checks and glasses for nursing home residents, only three optometrists in the state currently provide care in nursing homes, according to Tulsa World.
