Facility owner's good deed gets him fined
LTC Liability Monitor, January 8, 2007
Following a tragic fire last fall that displaced about three dozen elderly homeless shelter residents in Canonsburg, PA, a local nursing home owner opened his facility to help out, reported the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At the time, many considered lending the nursing home facility, staff, and equipment to help the homeless a heroic act. Now the state department of health has fined the owner $18,000 for endangering the health of his residents. The owner and his supporters are fighting to reduce or eliminate the fine, saying common sense prevented him from leaving the elderly out in the cold, according to the Post-Gazette.
