It's your department's job to keep patients' identities secret when speaking with the media, but what happens when your hospital is breaking new medical ground? According to an article in The Washington Post, when doctors perform a landmark surgery or procedure, reporters don't want to just speak with doctors. They want to hear the results first hand, from the patient themselves.

This can bring a whole new level of stress to many patients, who are more interested in regaining their health than becoming poster children for the particular procedure. According to The Post, some hospitals have prepared for such events by working with patients ahead of time to teach them how to handle media inquiries.
