Support is just a click away
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, January 5, 2007
Support groups used to meet once a week, at a hospital or other community location, but with the rise of social networking Web sites, those suffering from cancer, depression, asthma, and other diseases now have support 24-7.
Sites such as DailyStrength.org, RealMentalHealth.com, OrganizedWisdom.com, and WellnessCommunity.org offer patients and caregivers support, advice, and information. Another site, Grouploop.org was designed specifically for teens with cancer and allows users to search for other users by age, hometown, and type of disease.
Those searching for medical information continued to turn to the Web in 2006. A survey taken in July 2006 showed Internet searches for health-related information increased 8% over the previous year.
