’I don't know, but I’m guessing it's more than an arm and a leg’
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, January 2, 2007
The majority of Americans say they have no concept of how their doctor compares to others when it comes to the cost of services, says a recent survey sponsored by HealthMarkets, a North Richland Hills, TX, health insurer.
When told the lowest price charged for a knee replacement was $22,000, 83% said the highest price couldn't have been more than $66,000. Actual knee replacement costs ranged from $22,000 to $77,239. The survey showed only one in 10 respondents could guess the high cost charged for a tonsillectomy, at $13,187.
Seventy percent of survey respondents said they would like to have access to online data comparing the costs of health providers.
