Researchers to study dental care in the elderly
LTC Liability Monitor, December 28, 2006
Researchers say that half to three-quarters of nursing home residents today keep their own teeth into old age. This change comes from better overall preventive oral healthcare, but it's created a predicament for elderly in nursing homes, reported the Associated Press (AP). Nursing home caregivers often lack the expertise or time needed to maintain good daily care, but poor dental care can lead to stroke, arterial disease, and pneumonia. A two-year study will focus on training licensed nursing assistants to help residents with daily dental care, according to the AP.
