Washington state to improve disaster plans

LTC Liability Monitor, December 26, 2006

Public health officials are reviewing emergency response following a windstorm that left about a million western Washington state homes and businesses without power. One area of high priority is improving communications with nursing homes, reported the Associated Press (AP). No nursing home deaths were reported during the storm, but it left many facilities' residents uncomfortable, cold, and confused. Although many nursing homes had adequate disaster plans in place, others needed assistance during the recent storm. Officials plan to add nursing homes to their future emergency plans, according to the AP.
