Surgeons fight to open surgical hospital

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, December 26, 2006

A group of physicians in Ohio are fighting to open a surgical hospital despite state and local efforts against the project, according to The Springfield News-Sun.

The group, led by two Springfield, OH, physicians, teamed with Prexus Health Partners to open the surgical hospital.

But last week state legislation banned specialty hospitals for 90 days to study their potential impact on the community. The state governor has until December 26 to veto the moratorium or it will go into effect in February.

That legislation "was highly discriminatory " said Springfield physician Joseph Cromwell, according to The Springfield News-Sun. "If a $20 million business wanted to open up in Springfield, would it encounter this many roadblocks?"

A local health system is also challenging the development, claiming that if the surgical hospital is built, it would take significant revenue from the system. The loss of revenue would force the system to abandon plans to build a new campus and prevent it from offering low to non-reimbursed services.
