ASC seeks to become state's first surgical hospital

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, December 19, 2006

An ambulatory surgery center (ASC) applied last week to become Missouri's first specialty surgical hospital, according to a story from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The St. Louis Surgical Center of Creve Coeur's attempt to expand to a surgical hospital is more likely to occur than it would have in past years due to the lifting of a federal ban on surgical hospitals and the state considering easing its own regulatory restrictions.

A state legislative committee suggested eliminating Missouri's certificate of need process. Changing the ASC to a surgical hospital currently requires a certificate of need, which would come from the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee, according to the story.
