Survey finds most physicians do not use widely accessible IT tools

E-Health Trend Watch, December 15, 2006

Most physicians do not use inexpensive, widely accessible information technology tools in their practice, the lead author of a study that will appear in the November Journal of General Internal Medicine has found, according to a Ziff Davis Internet article.

The study finds that fewer than 4% of physicians communicate with patients via e-mail, about 30% e-mail other clinicians, and about 40% use real-time computerized decision support, including government and professional society Web sites and searchable databases. Richard Grant, lead author of the study and faculty member at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said one goal of the survey was to look at the use of IT that does not require significant capital investments.
