Seniors face greatest risk of dying from flu

Infection Control Monitor, December 22, 2006

The flu poses a greater risk of death for seniors age 85 and older, according to a new government study.

The flu kills nearly 8% of people 85 and older who are hospitalized because of the illness, according to a report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The rate is about 3% for people aged 65 to 84.

The CDC recommends everyone over the age of 50 receive the flu vaccine each year.
