Man steals identity to gain medical care
Healthcare Security Weekly, December 18, 2006
You've heard of identity theft. But in this case, Maryville, TN police say a man used someone else's information to check into the Blount Memorial Hospital.
Police told WATE television news that a man posing as someone else checked into the hospital detox unit on November 30. The patient used the other man's name, date of birth, and Social Security number.
Hospital officials got suspicious when asking about his insurance. That's when the man fled, sticking the hospital with a bill for $12,000, the TV station reported on its Web site. The hospital contacted police and started the investigation.
