Study says HIV testing should be routine

Infection Control Monitor, December 8, 2006

Voluntary screening for HIV should be a part of the medical care of all adults, not just those at high risk, according to a study by researchers at the Yale School of Medicine.

The study, reported in the December 5 Annals of Internal Medicine, provides support for the CDC's guidelines issued in September that recommend routine screening of all persons age 13 to 64 in all healthcare settings. The Yale team reported that routine HIV screening is cost-effective, even in communities where as few as two in 1,000 people have undiagnosed HIV. Roughly 300,000 Americans do not know they are infected with HIV and early identification can help save lives.
