Three hospitals battle Norwalk virus
Infection Control Monitor, December 8, 2006
Three hospitals-one in the U.S. and two in Canada-are dealing with an outbreak of the Norwalk virus.
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham, just outside of Boston, was disinfected last weekend after norovirus infected 22 employees and two patients. Administrators told the infected employees to not come to work for 72 hours, while the two patients were put into isolation.
At the Saint John Regional Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick, an outbreak of the intestinal bug affected more than 100 staff and patients, reported the Canadian Press. The hospital closed three units to visitors and new patients and restricted other parts of the facility to visits by immediate family. Employees who were sick were told to stay home.
In Montreal, Lakeshore General Hospital quarantined several patients and shut down a ward to contain what officials there believe could be an outbreak of Norwalk virus, according to CBC News. At least 26 patients had fallen ill with the virus.
