Orthopedic surgeon sending more patients to PT
Rehab Private Practice Alert, November 29, 2006
A Boston orthopedic surgeon said he is sending 90% of his patients to physical therapy instead of surgery, according to the Boston Globe.
Lyle Micheli, an orthopedic surgeon and director of sports medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, is just one of many in the Boston area who says that therapy is often the preferred method for dealing with injuries, reported the Globe.
The trend is seen as part of the reason for the shortage of PTs across the country, says Jeffrey B. Palmer, director of physical medicine and rehab at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
The demand for PTs has led to an increase in PT programs from 140 10 years ago to more than 200 today, according to the Globe.
