Telemedicine to link big island with Queen's trauma center
E-Health Trend Watch, December 1, 2006
The Queen's Medical Center, the only trauma center in Hawaii, will begin treating patients on the island of Hawaii (referred to as the big island) using telemedicine technology. The technology will link Queen's, which is located in Honolulu, to North Hawaii by using a handheld camera in the big island's hospital emergency room and a surgical camera in its operating room for minimally invasive procedures.
The center will use a $481,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to purchase telemedicine equipment for Waimea's North Hawaii Community Hospital on the big island. The overall project cost of $630,000 will be provided by Queen's and North Hawaii. According to the Pacific Business News, the pilot program will begin in 2007.
