Cutting down on cigarettes doesn’t lower death risk

Respiratory Care Weekly, November 29, 2006

Smokers who limit the number of cigarettes they smoke in a day won't improve their chances of living longer, according to a study in the December Tobacco Control. Although reducing consumption may serve as a temporary measure in smoking cessation, study results of 51,000 men and women aged 24 to 34 show that the only safe way to avoid the death risks caused by smoking is to quit, say the authors.

"In both sexes, a reduction in cigarette consumption by 50% was not associated with a markedly lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease or smoking-related cancer," the authors conclude.
