Q: Can lens cleaners with silicone harm antireflective or hard coatings on safety eyewear?
Lab Safety Advisor, November 28, 2006
A: According to Rita Widner from Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, NY, it is not whether the cleaner has silicone or not. It is the acidity of the cleaner that can affect coated eyewear
Silicone lens cleaners are used in environments where increased antifogging and/or antistatic protection are required. Non-silicone lens cleaners are used in environments requiring product purity and/or prohibiting silicone. Coatings can range from high-end vacuum-coated finish to a water-based, air-dry coating.
Harsh chemicals can affect eyewear coating over time. You should use a neutral pH cleaner when cleaning your eyewear. In order to avoid a reaction to a specific lens cleaner, ask your eye care professional what type of coating is on your safety glasses and to recommend a specific cleaning product for the type of coating you have.
